Tears Glands

Tears Glands

Our tear glands do not start functioning fully until approximately 6 weeks after birth. That is why when babies cry upon delivery, there are no tears, only cries.

Tears are secreted by the main and accessory lacrimal glands. The main lacrimal gland is located in the outer corner of our eyes. Any damage to these glands will reduce its production.

Tear reflex

It is a complex pathway. The nerve identified for this is Trigeminal nerve, which is the Cranial Nerve V (No. 5). Why do we cry is still a mystery to scientist. It is one of the only bodily fluid that does not gross us out.

What makes up our tears?

Average thickness of a tear is around 7 micro meter and average volume is 7 micro litre. It is made out of 3 layers: mucin, watery and oily layer.

Why do we get dry eye?

10-20% of tear is evaporated. The others are drained out of the eye through the puncta.

Eye care is just as important as daily oral hygiene.

A good daily routine can help decrease risk to your eyes and reduce the tiredness you may already be experiencing.
